A visit to the Marceau Constantin Museum provides a unique artistic experience in a rural setting. Now aged 97, this artist and former student of André Lhote and Ossipe Zadkine, highly praised by international critics, has now also been honoured by his native village, St. Christol d’Albion which has dedicated a museum to him.
Built in 2009, this communal museum contains 200 works using many different techniques. You can listen to recorded commentaries by Marceau Constantin himself, while discovering the work this artist has produced over a 70-year period, in Paris-Montparnasse, Provence, and the world over.
The diversity of subjects and variety of techniques ranging from pigments to working with gold makes this a truly exceptional collection of modern art, particularly sculpture. The different topics are grouped thematically, floating between cubism, the neo-classical and expressionism, sometimes touching on abstractionism. Analysis and synthesis are complemented by a subtle form of geometry based on the golden ratio, with “graphism” (the expression of thought in material symbols) playing a prominent role.
Visits are open to all. Audio-guides about Marceau Constantin’s work are available in both French and English. There are also commentaries on the history of the museum as well as the life of the artist, as well as explanations of the various techniques he uses. These include paintings, sketches, sculptures, illustrations, prints, embedded images, silk-screen printing, Folk Art ceramics ranging from traditional pottery glazes to working with gold – not forgetting the materials used.
Facilities include French/English audio-guides; air-conditioned exhibition-space; free parking; access for disabled visitors.
